Spousal Maintenance- WHY?

Hi all, I’m going to be answering Greg from Gosport question today, he’s asked why he will have to pay his wife Spousal Maintenance?  Wow! Can you imagine how many times I have been asked this? Spousal maintenance is need based maintenance to try and balance the couple’s standard of living after they are divorced and more importantly to give the wife/husband a period of time to adjust once the parties have moved apart. Yes that’s right, husband as well. Most people think of spousal maintenance being just for the wife but husbands get spousal maintenance in many cases. If you gave up work when you had children or worked fewer hours to look after your family you may need extra income for a while. A judge would want to see you financially independent of each other though at some point in the near future.

The tricky question is for how long should it be paid and to answer that then we must look at each individual case.

Hope this has helped, please keep your question coming to info@divorcenegotiator.co.uk

Have a good day
